  1. Operation Desert Storm was a code-name of the
  2. military action to eject the Iraqi army from
  3. Kuwait in 1991. The buildup phase was 
  4. code-named Operation Desert Shield and lasted
  5. from August 1990, when Kuwait was first 
  6. invaded by Iraq, to January 1991 when 
  7. Operation Desert Storm was unleashed, 
  8. starting the Gulf War. Desert Storm ended 
  9. with the defeat of the Iraqi army in the
  10. Kuwaiti theater of operations late February
  11. 1991. The cost of the operation was in excess
  12. of $53 billion.
